The average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 5% as of April 13, up from 3.04% a year earlier, according to mortgage finance giant Freddie Mac.
At the same time, home-buying demand continues to exceed the extremely low inventory of homes for sale. Many homes on the market receive multiple offers, pushing prices higher.
