When the Fed Stops Talking, Your Mortgage Starts Listening

The Federal Reserve’s decision to hold rates steady offered little guidance about future policy, increasing uncertainty for bond markets and borrowers. Long-term Treasury yields remain elevated, helping keep mortgage and other borrowing costs high. A $400,000 30-year mortgage at 6.69% costs substantially more each month than the same loan at 3.5%. Investors should avoid abrupt reactions and instead review bond sensitivity, liquidity, equity exposure, and debt affordability. Diversification, emergency reserves, and alignment with personal goals remain important. Because inflation, energy disruptions, and Federal Reserve communication can shift quickly, portfolios should be prepared for several possible economic outcomes ahead over time.
